Hand painted kiln fired glass Artist

Julie was introduced to the art of glass firing and slumping whilst studying at the SA School of Art in the early 1990’s.  She was immediately drawn to the process, and began to explore ways of painting and firing designs on to the glass.

Working from a fully equipped home-based studio, Julie continues to develop her unique style of decoration.

“Glass is a wonderfully exciting medium to work in, Julie says.  “I always get a great amount of pleasure when I open my kilns and see the jewel like colours that have enlivened what was once just a plain piece of clear flat glass.”

Each glass item is hand cut and edge-worked before being individually hand painted. The item is then placed on a mould, and kiln fired at over 800ºc.  This enables the paint to actually melt into the surface of the glass as it slumps, giving a brilliant gloss and permanency.

Julie’s designs range from fun hand painted glass and mini ceramic magnets through to one-off exhibition pieces and commissions.  A current favourite is hand painted ‘sun catchers’ that can be hung in an indoor or outdoor setting.

Some of her work includes large hand painted platters, inspired by vintage floral designs. Other pieces explore the interplay of colour and the patterns formed by repetitive tonal placement.

After a career in Art Gallery management, Julie retired at the end of 2020 and now enjoys devoting more time to her creative pursuits.
